Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne
FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: ★★★★ NOTES: A consistent reprint up until the second-to-last reel, which appears to have reprinted both an older 35mm print and a rougher 16mm print because one of the original reels on the main print was missing or damaged. It was easy to tell how slightly worn the reprint was from the subtitles. Not a thorough translation; some lines of dialogue are missing, a whole minute is untranslated after the foreign ambassadors wake from their Goopy-induced trance and I’m certain the characters didn’t actually say “What assholes” or “Oh my Lord! It’s hot as hell!” And yes, the smash to colour at the end looked marvellous. DATE: July 23rd 2022 CINEMA: BFI LOCATION: Southbank

Lightyear
Towards the end, Buzz stands in the tunnel of a space station, and has an epiphany. The adventures he's had with his new teammates remind him not only the people he left behind, but his family. That causes him to not only break down into tears, but sweat insanely. Standing on a steel bridge above a shallow stream, he kneels down, face to the floor, and his face becomes a waterfall of sweat and tears. He misses his parents that much. Afterwards, the team prepares for their next mission and the credits roll. Midway through the credits, though, very abruptly, Disney intervenes and tries to connect this Pixar film to the MCU. A minor character played by Bong Joon-ho is seen looking at a creature in a murky basement, and in walks Doctor Strange to talk to the creature. That creature is revealed to be Winnie-the-Pooh; a small, demonic Pooh creeping up behind the window of a washing machine from hell. In the voice of Fozzie Bear, he promises Strange that bad things are coming and he will wreak havoc if Strange fails to stop him, hisses with a wide, toothy grin and a menacing look. Cut back to the credits, which continue in front of a ring of fire. Disney's not even trying anymore.

FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: ★★ NOTES: A rare, recently unearthed archive print from back in the day, that made it to 2022 all scratched and tattered. A dozen frames are lost, the changeovers are severely damaged, the sound is completely roughened and the bottom borders on less than half the shots were clearly visible, and it wasn’t even projected off position. It was a heavenly thing to witness. Behind all the ruin is a picture so vivid and sharp you’d think it was the original. The greatest irony of this print is the two cuts that occur when Toto first kisses Elena. DATE: July 15th 2022 CINEMA: The Prince Charles Cinema LOCATION: West End

The Road Warrior
FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: ★★½ NOTES: This print could only have been a re-release shortly after its original theatrical run, as the film was rated X in release yet this print opens with an 18 certificate. So scratchy you can hear it, though despite some frames looking like they were bitten into, there is not a single noticeable cut between the (severely worn) changeovers. The print has seen better days - just what this film deserves. DATE: July 11th 2022 CINEMA: The Prince Charles Cinema LOCATION: West End
