American Psycho
FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: ★★★★ NOTES: Presented as a week-long engagement for its 20th anniversary. A dozen vertical scratches the whole way through as in Pulp Fiction and a noticeably bluer tint throughout the final act, but the print otherwise looked good! The changeovers weren’t even that dirty, and best of all did not cut anything whatsoever; this film perfectly maintained its original length. Hocus Pocus (1993)
FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: ★★★★½ NOTES: It’s quite dusty, several frames are bumped and at a couple of minutes does it lose stability. And it’s still a crisp print! The shakiness aside from those two scenes is hardly noticeable, and the cutaways barely trim the film. Felt almost like seeing it in 1993. Pulp Fiction
FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: ★★★½ NOTES: Thought I could see a print of this film first at the BFI Southbank, but it turned out the format was listed as “35mm” on error, meaning I had to walk down London with nothing else to do. Prince Charles came to me rescue once again. Disney’s distribution logo instead of Park Circus, the big M instead of Miramax’s annoying CGI logo plaster, dozens of wobbling lines trailing down the screen, scratches from time to time, dust all the time, abrupt cuts during the credits. As there should be. DATE: October 22nd 2020 CINEMA: The Prince Charles Cinema LOCATION: West End

Pulp Fiction
SCREENING: 35mm DATE: October 22nd CINEMA: The Prince Charles Cinema LOCATION: West End NOTE: My first attempt at seeing this was on September 6th, at the BFI Southbank. Took the train by myself for the first time since before lockdown, wearing a mask but nevertheless excited to see a print of this film at NFT1. However, the current Park Circus logo ran, then that stupid 2009 Miramax plaster logo, and the film played. Digitally. Despite being advertised as a 35mm print. This information was incorrectly reused from a previous listing, presumably the screenings in 2016. Waited until the opening credits started playing and left. Asked an usher about the confusion, and he confirmed that all screenings at the moment had to be played digitally, so I asked to leave and was escorted out, passing doors containing nitrate film. With nothing else to do there, I just decided to take a walk down an apocalyptic London so my journey wasn’t wasted. A pandemic is not the time to falsely advertise to an autistic person making their return to the BFI Southbank for the first time since January. I’m just chuffed that the Prince Charles was able to come to my rescue, as they always have done, with a screening that opened with the Buena Vista logo and the big M.

Lost in Translation
