Pulp Fiction
FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: ★★★½ NOTES: Thought I could see a print of this film first at the BFI Southbank, but it turned out the format was listed as “35mm” on error, meaning I had to walk down London with nothing else to do. Prince Charles came to me rescue once again. Disney’s distribution logo instead of Park Circus, the big M instead of Miramax’s annoying CGI logo plaster, dozens of wobbling lines trailing down the screen, scratches from time to time, dust all the time, abrupt cuts during the credits. As there should be. DATE: October 22nd 2020 CINEMA: The Prince Charles Cinema LOCATION: West End

Pulp Fiction
SCREENING: 35mm DATE: October 22nd CINEMA: The Prince Charles Cinema LOCATION: West End NOTE: My first attempt at seeing this was on September 6th, at the BFI Southbank. Took the train by myself for the first time since before lockdown, wearing a mask but nevertheless excited to see a print of this film at NFT1. However, the current Park Circus logo ran, then that stupid 2009 Miramax plaster logo, and the film played. Digitally. Despite being advertised as a 35mm print. This information was incorrectly reused from a previous listing, presumably the screenings in 2016. Waited until the opening credits started playing and left. Asked an usher about the confusion, and he confirmed that all screenings at the moment had to be played digitally, so I asked to leave and was escorted out, passing doors containing nitrate film. With nothing else to do there, I just decided to take a walk down an apocalyptic London so my journey wasn’t wasted. A pandemic is not the time to falsely advertise to an autistic person making their return to the BFI Southbank for the first time since January. I’m just chuffed that the Prince Charles was able to come to my rescue, as they always have done, with a screening that opened with the Buena Vista logo and the big M.

Lost in Translation
FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: ★★★★ NOTES: Started at the end of a countdown! And also a black line trailing down the screen for a couple of minutes. Also a few green scratches. The rest of the print was nicely preserved! DATE: October 22nd 2020 CINEMA: The Prince Charles Cinema LOCATION: West End

The Matrix
FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: ★★★ NOTES: This list’s 100th entry! The border was off position at the beginning, and after a minute it was moved close enough to its correct position if not exactly. Numerous cuts in this print (from age, not just by Ferman), and some at really inconvenient points. Two missing frames when Neo dodged the bullets! Some noticeable scratches and damage; some scenes, starting from when Neo and Morpheus take the elevator to visit the Oracle, were heavily damaged despite only being a couple of minutes away from a changeover. Ferman’s headbutt removal was quite easy to spot. This is, of course, the one fault of this print I just couldn’t forgive at all. DATE: October 19th 2020 CINEMA: The Prince Charles Cinema LOCATION: West End Four years later… FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: ★★★★ NOTES: Saw this print on the screen downstairs after feeling I didn’t get the most out of my experience seeing it upstairs, and it better puts into perspective just how phenomenal this film looks even today. Still noticeably censored by Ferman, but this print is in healthier condition than the previous one. Only serious damage taken is when Smith is interrogating Neo, and trailing scratches are prominent here, but otherwise looks terrific as any print of this movie should.
