FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: ★★★★½ NOTES: French print, only made evident from the title added before the opening crawl, screened on the day of the massacre. Some scenes look more like the an original print than others, but there are enough scratches and black (at one point white) cuts to make it feel like a first-time experience. It’s kind of a bummer that the print looks so good, however, upon hearing that last year’s print was far older and grittier, and must’ve run its course since it was screened. Saw this in 35mm at a ridiculously stylish cinema where the best view was at the very top, and if you can’t sit at the top then you have to look straight up at a relatively small screen. There is even a restaurant installed for dinner and a show, regardless of the view. Rick Dalton’s filmography is more versatile than ridiculous action films and westerners, including old-timey comedies and even Disney animation. A beautifully hand-drawn but heavily anachronistic Disney logo was created for his movie, with the current logo drawn above an old map and surrounded by characters like Mickey and Pinocchio, but also Cogsworth.

Thurop Van Orman would later direct a sequel to Early Man. Despite still being produced at Aardman, it looked more practical and cheap than the studio in their current years, almost like their days before Wrong Trousers - Dug’s mouth at one point whistles and it looks rough and pasted on. There is very little dialogue in this sequel, like Shaun the Sheep, though there is still at least one line of (faintly) intelligible English every minute, ringing these characters closer to actual cavemen. However, as much like Thurop’s work as it felt, the humour doesn’t work nearly as well as Van Orman’s work beforehand.
