Dinosaur
FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…ยฝ NOTES: Presented as part of the Disney season with the ingenious (and more visually appealing) Get a Horse. Heavy on dust and vertical wear, but smooth playback until the cut to credits. Presented off-centre, so during the cave rest scene and the fights by the landslide you can see where the sky ends. When the reel changed as the dinosaurs discovered the watering hole, projector A was completely out of focus for several seconds. And no, this only looks very slightly better than it does on a HD digital copy. The composition issues are barely obscured by 35mm film, and the dinosaurs are as difficult to look at as ever. Challengers
[youtube id=MDnVk5jIJr0] Trailer debut: June 20th 2023 Original release: September 15th 2023 New release: April 26th 2024 Difference: 224 days Between trailer and release: 311 days Reasons: Delayed due to the combined WGA/SAG-AFTRA strike halting public appearances (e.g. festivals) for all affiliated artists. It's worth noting that Amazon currently owns MGM, and they are among the perpetrators of all the layoffs and unfair pay. Benefits: Likely to make its official debut at Sundance or Berlinale. If this sets a precedent for already-wrapped films, imagine how the likes of Iger or Zaslav will take it. Flaws: A lot of Zendaya stans are going to be disappointed.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
Before his major Hollywood comeback, Spain was producing their own serialised Indiana Jones films starring Ford once a year for IMAX. We saw each one and the same IMAX screen every year, and the fourth one, which took place in a strangely modern setting similar to Blackfen, was the first one screened in 3D. The opening sequence was screened in 2D, in fuzzier quality than 2K Xenon, but the 3D portion was in pristine single laser quality. We had to walk out of this one to browse the Bluewater-esque shopping centre when he was about to enter a wrestling ring and missed the closing 20 minutes before the last two minutes of credits.

The Black Hole
FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: โ˜…โ˜…โ˜… NOTES: Presented as part of the BFIโ€™s โ€˜100 Years of Disneyโ€™ season, preceded by a DCP screening of Lifted (which I had already first seen on the big screen this year, what are the odds?). Original release Technovision print that opens with the original two-minute overture, plenty of cuts and two different changeover cue marks so itโ€™s not easy to tell how many reels there are exactly, but this is about as faded and as low on dust as the print of Fantasia, and the monaural optical soundtrack is terrific.
