FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: ★★★★★ NOTES: Now this print must have been sourced from the original release, and it is surprisingly excellently preserved; hardly any any dust present most of the time, and it is usually barely noticeable when it is. Plays smoothly, colours are perfect. Only problem is that the film suddenly got burned midway by a couple of actual gremlins, and they played shadow puppets in the projection booth before loading an obscure, vintage nude film? At least Hulk Hogan of all people was there to sort things out, hope the projectionist is alright… DATE: December 14th 2022 CINEMA: The Prince Charles Cinema LOCATION: West End

FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: ★★★★ NOTES: Japan Foundation print, screened as part of In Dreams are Monsters. A gorgeous and perfectly arranged print that is close to authentic; each segment ends by changing over to the next reel. Shame that the final reel of ‘Hoichi the Earless’ was projected slightly out of focus. Three of the reels change a quarter-second late, and the second reel of ‘In a Cup of Tea’ starts off unstable until the first line of dialogue is spoken. FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: ★★★★ NOTES: This has been screened so often on 35mm in this cinema that it’s difficult to tell which company and re-release this is attributed to. It looks sharp enough that it would only be from the 2000’s, but it was not preceded by any logo other than Liberty’s. A very good print nonetheless, even if it adds a few extra jump cuts and an ounce of wear when George discovers what Billy has done to his $8,000. FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: ★★★½ NOTES: The special edition. Very worn, with several cuts and green lines. The scene in which the rat is drowned to test the breathing fluid, cut down to appease the RSPCA, was clearly spliced in by the censors from a print of the theatrical cut to save the editors the trouble of having to cut around the human face shots again for this edition. SCREENING: Regular DATE: December 5th CINEMA: Picturehouse LOCATION: Greenwich NOTE: Meant to see this on Saturday, had no idea the DLR would be closed for engineering works and then the one bus from Lewisham we could count on to take us to Greenwich arrived twenty minutes late just to offload and halted service. I got a complimentary free ticket that I used for this showing. I love our transport system!
