Max the Movie Guy added 1 item to Films I've seen on celluloid in the digital era list
FORMAT: 35mm
CONDITION: ★★★½
NOTES: The print started off all worn out but while dusty turned out just fine. Just a couple of noticeable cuts that affect the sound after the opening credits, but the reels often appeared increasingly spotty two minutes before the changeovers. Still, the picture is beautifully clear underneath all the dust and scratches.

Max the Movie Guy added 1 item to Films I've seen on celluloid in the digital era list
FORMAT: 35mm
CONDITION: ★★★★½
NOTES: After around 20 screenings, the print looked considerably healthy, though it was practically spotless on its world premiere back in October. It wasn’t easy to tell how dusty it was with most of the footage having been digitised from vintage cinema and some of it unremastered, but it was easy to notice the thin vertical lines trailing the left side. Excised from the print was part of the countdown leader, which was not shown at this screening but the projectionist in the US sent director Charlie Shackleton back three burnt frames, all of which captured the ‘6’. That doesn’t sound very enlightening.

FORMAT: 35mm
CONDITION: ★★★★
NOTES: Presented as part of the BFI’s Judy Garland season, introduced with some context on Garland’s downward spiral as experienced by Dirk Bogarde’s nephew, Ulric van den Bogarde. Print was at its clearest midway through Jenny’s titular closing number, and the quality was for the most part surprisingly clean. A brownish tint throughout after the opening credits, and the only noticeable instance of a missing frame was during Jenny’s phone call with Matt. ‘By Myself’ was so red it practically drenched the room in blood. The screen disappeared for two seconds during even-numbered changeovers, and the projectionist’s hand was easily noticeable at the bottom-right corner, trying to adjust the projection in time for the final reel.
