FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: ★★ NOTES: Subtitled print courtesy of the ICA themselves, screened free for members while tickets for non-members were just £6. One of the scratchiest film prints I’ve ever seen. Looks beautiful underneath the damages and scratches, which are thicker and more prominent throughout the first and last minute of each reel. At least three damages per reel, most noticeably during the motorcycle chase, while the audio is at its grittiest preceding the changeover as Tetsuo overpowers the children as the hospital. The subtitles, which read in a font that has been uncommon for film prints since, would often bleed. Personally, I cannot think of a more extraordinary way to experience Akira.
