This is something else for Garth Davis, the visuals being trippier than you could expect from him. The apostles only make cameos towards the beginning, and the rest involves Jesus and Mary luring a family from the present to this space of green by a cliff, through a bridge and at the end of a river surrounded by upward cliffs. The daughter and her friend look like a certain couple of big cuties I follow on Tumblr, and their actresses, despite having little experience, are really good, especially when this old, bony-with-a-paunch African vizier commits suicide by falling backwards off of the cliff by the beach. Near the end, two boys explore the bridge and are chased into it by a talking deer-dinosaur mutation.

Zack Snyder returned and yes, he stuck to being not just dark but hopeless too, despite this sequel being a crossover between the DCEU and the MCU. And by dark, I mean UGLY. R-rated, terrifying, Carpenter/Cronenberg-esque. A mysterious dark force affects these superheroes and turns them into horrifically mutated monsters, each of them turning against each other. Thor and Superman are among those affected, and both have their faces crack open, letting loose eyes in the middle of where their foreheads may be, sharp teeth two inches longer than they used to be and sentient multicoloured veins stick out and squirm. At least, that's how I remember Thor but Superman definitely had something similar going on when they were trying to punch Batman. Iron Man also has it bad, as when he tries to escape by flying his helmet melts and then starts to come apart, revealing a cross between Snoke and every incarnation of Wade Wilson's charred face there ever was. His head grows bigger and bigger before he decides to chop it off even while flying. He grows another head, but it's just as damaged as Ryan Reynolds' Wade Wilson.
