NOTES: Technicolor IB print of the Rankin-Bass dub, and despite being just five years younger than the former print it looks impressively preserved. It also suffers from significantly more trimmings than King Kong vs. Godzilla, going as far as to cut a line from Susan down to sound like sheโs not just rejecting his offer to come along with her but rejecting a date, leaving the emotional blow Kong takes in the following shot feel even harder. Itโs hilarious. Inevitably, the projector encountered a fault, seemingly because one of the reels hadnโt had two of its surviving frames spliced together. They got it back up and running several minutes later.

NOTES: Original UK release Technicolor IB print of the American bastardisation, which is very, very scratchy and has lost a ton of frames but not a single ounce of colour. Sat next to some men who had seen this film at a second-run cinema back in the day.

Max the Movie Guy added 1 item to Movies according to my dreams list
Taking place in a single back garden, the apes fight against Proximus Caesar's tyrannical rule, unbeknownst that they are in the presence of two cruel, imposing gods, one of which sounds like Jane Horrocks. The end of the world is nigh, and only do the apes discover that when the gods, sick of a world perverted by abominations and violence, decide to end it all. Every life form, not limited to the apes, their horses or the human slaves, crumbles, breaks apart and dissolves into nothingness. There is a particularly gruesome shot of the ape children, snow monkeys who look a lot cartoonier than their adult counterparts, breaking apart sixth by sixth into slices and dying, those slices crumbling into what look like fuse beads. A few minutes later, everyone is gone, and the earth is but a haven for all soil, greenery and water to thrive on its own.

NOTES: Almost saw this at Picturehouse Central twice back in 2022, but their projector failed on both attempts and so they resorted to a DCP - and left me heading over to the Barbican for a showing of The Territory, to give my journey a pay-off. But the Prince Charles Cinema did a spectacular job at getting a near-perfect print to look this sharp on this screen. A shot of Ford at the party is covered in burn marks and another scene experiences some wear, but otherwise the print looks incredibly clear.
