FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: ★★★½ NOTES: 2002 BFI print presented with a 20-minute intermission, screened as part of the Kurosawa season (though it would screen again in March as it is listed in Sight and Sound’s Greatest Films of All Time). The print looks exquisite, particularly during shots of wheat fields and forests. Post-intermission, however, the film is covered until the end in trailing lines. FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: ★★ NOTES: They did use the 1996 Artificial Eye reissue for this one, thank goodness, presented with a five-minute intermission. Varying degrees of precision, colour tone and clarity here; tons of wear and damage, several hard cuts and colour tone changes occur during Sonny’s cameo. Shots will either be projected/printed out of focus or relatively clear, shots will either be tinted a prominent brown or cool down to a greyer tone. I’m pretty sure that during the riot in Cuba, two consecutive shots were overlaid by what looked like a tilted ‘E’ at the bottom of the screen. FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: ★★★★★ NOTES: The Coppola Restoration, presented by Park Circus, meaning that the Paramount logo was indeed plastered with the 2003 logo and the golden tint was present throughout, with an ounce of added green on the third reel. It would have been incredible if they had instead chosen the 1996 Artificial Eye print, which would have suffered from wear, but this print looked beautiful, possibly because the print was intended to be screened in the middle of 2020 until we all went to hell, and hadn’t been screened again until late in 2022. FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: ★★★★ NOTES: The music over the footage of the canyons glitches out for several seconds, then proceeds to completely overwhelm the speakers; Glass’ score sounds tremendous. The print looks vivid and authentic the rest of the time. On the first microchip shot, as it changes over to the next reel, it dips to black for a split-second, and a frame of the final shot is torn.
