FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: ★★★★½ NOTES: Provided by the UCLA Film & Television Archive through the Robert Altman Collection; this meant that the full 114-minute cut was screened and a UK audience got to learn some more about Pappy and actually hear Popeye curse - this cut was passed with an A (proto-PG) certificate but scrapped in favour of the 97-minute cut that became Disney’s default version and ended up certified U. Feels just about equal to seeing it back in the day; dirt and vertical lines are prominent but not to a great extent, changeovers are perfect. DATE: June 29th 2021 CINEMA: BFI LOCATION: Southbank

FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: ★★★★★ NOTES: Previously attempted to be screened by the BFI Southbank twice, double-billed with Victor Kossakovsky’s The Belovs. Both screenings were cancelled by a lockdown. It looks exactly like a print they’d keep in their archives; it almost looks like a print that could be scanned for at least a 2K transfer. Possibly imported from America, as the print begins only on the Fine Line logo, changeovers bear minimal dirt or damage and the cues look just like cigarette burns. A fantastically preserved print. FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: ★★★½ NOTES: MGM’s 2003 extended English version, reprinted in 2008 by the BFI and Park Circus. Several light scratches and a straight line down the middle stuck through the entirety of the print. Changeovers did not have cue marks but did little harm to the audio except on the fourth. Fifth reel experiences some damage midway; these imperfections, however, very well suit spaghetti westerns like this. DATE: June 21st 2021 CINEMA: The Prince Charles Cinema LOCATION: West End

SCREENING: One-off DATE: June 19th CINEMA: The Prince Charles Cinema LOCATION: West End NOTE: Previously paid £15.99 to watch this, as everyone else did on release. Did not receive an expanded, post-lockdown theatrical run but would often be screened as a repertory, and this was the film’s first indoor screening in the UK.

FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: ★★★★½ NOTES: First changeover cut off some audio, second came with almost jail bar like scratches and the second reel encountered a few green scratches followed by a cut that actually befuddled the audience, but the rest of the print is impressively clean.
