Shrek 2
FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…ยฝ NOTES: Obviously the UK edit, which trades Larry King for Jonathan Ross, Joan Rivers for Kate Thornton and a headbutt for an equally vicious neck chop (the BBFCโ€™s ways had changed since passing Shrek 1โ€™s two headbutts with a U). Also flawless playback, though suffers from more prominent wear than its three-year-older predecessor. DATE: September 19th 2023 CINEMA: The Prince Charles Cinema LOCATION: West End

Shrek
FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜… NOTES: A fair deal of wear, with lines and/or marks heavily present at points, but otherwise a print so crisp you can see those 2001 rendering imperfections, and no faults in the playback whatsoever. Return to Oz
FORMAT: 70mm CONDITION: โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…ยฝ NOTES: Screened as part of a BFI Families series that in a way counts as a little epilogue to the Disney season, and although it has unfortunately taken a few shots of damage the print otherwise looks terrifyingly beautiful, colourful and clean. Projector A was slightly out of focus until a certain point when Dorothy is meeting the Nome King, meaning of course that projector B would also slightly drop focus and shift out of position until halfway through the final reel. When it is in perfect focus, the print is unreal to watch up close in the front row. DATE: September 17th 2023 CINEMA: BFI LOCATION: Southbank

Nostalghia
FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: โ˜…โ˜… NOTES: Screened from an appropriately well-worn original UK release print from Artificial Eye. Suffers from several, brutal slices and cuts and loud audible wear, and a minute with in the flooded basement encounters serious shrinkage, which the projectionist was late to get back in focus. However, the colours of the print are perfect, accentuating the darker shots, and the picture behind all the ruin is impressively clear. One wishes that the PCC would focus on projecting prints this perfectly more often. The subtitles were a mess; excessively inked with several spills, a few typos (โ€œgoog nightโ€, โ€œtradedyโ€) and some lines they forgot to translate were added in using a different font. A Story of Floating Weeds
FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…ยฝ NOTES: 2003 Janus print, presented with live piano accompaniment by Meg Morley as part of the BFIโ€™s Ozu season. Some shrinkage most noticeable in two of its reels. The first two reels were projected incredibly clearly, but afterwards projector A dropped focus and only the remaining reels projected through projector B were in perfect focus. Before the third reel we were offered another treat, in the form of a Japanese reel leader! DATE: September 9th 2023 CINEMA: BFI LOCATION: Southbank
