Last Night in Soho
FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: ★★★★★ NOTES: Seen in this format out of morbid curiosity. The colours look sickeningly unreal on this print regardless of the film’s quality, though part of me wishes this print looked as scratchy as it did in its opening two minutes, to really suit the film. Got a good chuckle out of the on-the-nose-ness of the projector’s focus adjusting on the Focus Features logo. DATE: February 7th 2022 CINEMA: The Prince Charles Cinema LOCATION: West End

Ryojin nikki
FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: ★★★★★ NOTES: Rarely screened Japan Foundation print, screened as part of their Touring Film Programme. Although changeovers cut off a second of sound and the projector drops focus early in the second half, leaving a blue shine around white imagery throughout the remainder of the film, this is an exceptional, clean print, spotless enough that it should be the basis for a scan for home viewing. Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives
FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: ★★★½ NOTES: Screened as part of Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s 3+3 season. An incredible experience, even if it’s far from the best preserved print; commonly suffered from multiple half-diagonal scratches per frame. No cigarette burns except on the changeover before the princess observes her youthful reflection – one of the prettiest scenes as a whole I’ve ever seen on celluloid – yet at this screening the reel changed over two seconds late, and the first five seconds of the following reel were muted. To its benefit, I rarely see test frames exposed, so this made the experience all the more satisfying. DATE: January 27th 2022 CINEMA: ICA LOCATION: The Mall
