Max the Movie Guy added 1 item to Films I've seen on celluloid in the digital era list
FORMAT: 35mm
CONDITION: ★★★★
NOTES: Provided by the Packard Humanities Institute. Hard to tell how worn this print is when it is a reprint of a very worn out original negative, as the changeovers which occur every five minutes are nearly identical. Will say this for the source negative though: it looks unreal, unique even, thanks to its varying hues depending on the environment of the scene and the misty quality of the picture, which more than suits the film especially when set in scenes of actual mist.

FORMAT: 35mm

NOTES: Beautiful, clear print with minimal ruin, except for a single, small, diagonal scratch that trails down the right half of the print through the last 40 minutes. Two cuts occurred when Anck-su-namun is touched and cats are explained to be “the protectors of the underworld” – nothing to do with James Ferman, just some missing frames. The scene that Ferman did cut, the hanging scene, is covered in thick vertical lines. This was screened in a double bill with Returns, and I was initially considering staying through the whole show when I booked it. Shortly after I did, they delayed it by 15 minutes, and this was too late for me so I decided to just come for the unbeatable first movie.

NOTES: 2003 director’s cut. In lighter scenery the dust is easiest to notice, and the scene in which facehugged Kane is under investigation is overlaid by several brown burn marks three times. Other than that, this 19-year-old print is very close to pristine, close to how it must have looked and felt on its original release.
